When you go to jewellery stores these days, it is not a rare sight to see the story of the blue bird on kids jewellery. Usually, this story is turned into jewellery via a rendition of the blue bird—both realistic and based on children’s books’ authors’ renditions—on shelf, either as pendants or charms on jewellery sized for children.
But what is this bird really about? Why do people even bother putting them on necklaces for their children to wear?
The story of the blue bird is a popular tale of parental encouragement for a child, so to speak, to fly and explore the world. Many authors have put their various twists and colours to the tale, but the core story remains the same. Some children, however, are more familiar with particular illustrations of the blue bird over others.
The story goes that the little blue
bird kept to himself on the nest and was of constant fear of flight. This was despite the fact that every night, before going to bed, he would inquire endlessly to his mother about the world outside the nest. The mother unknowingly sparks the blue bird’s interest when she responds by saying that there is “nothing” beyond the trees that the blue bird sees.
Enamoured over the thought, the blue bird left the next day in search of the so-called “nothing”, and along the way, meet other birds with whom he flies high and low with.
One can only imagine the illustration that colour the many story books that tell the story of the little blue bird. In rich colours portraying the skies and the green meadows in all their colourful glory, it is obvious why kids, regardless of them not grasping the humour of searching for “nothing”, will find themselves equally captured by this tale.
